Hello:

I am looking for some assistance and information about who to contact regarding the purchase and training of a dog for a security company. I am looking for either a Malinois or a Sheppard.

I have 2 dogs of my own and have been looking at becoming a dog handler.

if you have any suggestions please feel free to contact me.

I would be rather "Ginger"ly with who I bought a protection dog from. It could cost "Megabucks". I can't suggest anyone to you but I could certainly tell you of someone to avoid, she tries to be sneaky but fails at everything religiously.

Well any advice would be appreciated, cause my current dogs though they are great pets are not ones that I would consider training professionally. I know a couple of dog trainers in my area but they do agility and show stuff, I want my dogs to be an intigrated family and professional dog.

They are my snuggly buddies, we've done some obedience but that is as far as my interest takes me.

Welcome J_Blackmon!  How on earth did you ever happen upon this forum to ask your question?

No insult intended to my fellow forum members, but did you try Google?  You would also need something in your area, this isn't a regional board.

Did a quick google for you and this site came up:  Leerburg Forum.  I don't know anything about it but it's a start for you.

Good luck with your search.  As another poster already mentioned, you have to be very careful, there's a LOT of scammers out there.

Well, I appreciate your cander, however I was refered to this forum by a number of friends who found references to it on the Kijiji forums and I figured I would come and check it out for my self, I do appreciate your assistance and I hope that others will be willing to help me out on here as well.

I look forward to talking to people about my two dogs Kiely and Mishka, and seeing what people know about dog trainers and protection training for dogs in Ontario, Canada.

Well it appears that you might have little luck finding others who do protection work and dog training here.

What kind of dogs do you currently have?

There is a big difference in general pets and working dogs. Working dogs are pets too but have a job to do...eg. security and detection etc.

And you might want to check your city bylaws first as well.  You already have two dogs, are you allowed more?

We're allowed three as well.  But if you look at the bylaws carefully it allows for three dogs per residence...  including if you're fostering or even dogsitting for the day.  So no more than three dogs on the property at any given time.

Since I am familiar with Security Companies that are allowed to use Canines, How can you be sure that this dog is not going to be abused,?

And how do you train this dog, I have seen so many Security Companies
that get the dogs out of a pound, and than they have to work with a Guard who has no experience how to handle a canine,.it is ridiculous .And the poor dog gets hit.

I am all for working canines but in a proper environment. most of the time with a Security Company the dog gets different handlers, because the dog work's many shifts.
With the Police they have one handler, and he takes this Canine home.
And they form a bond.

Nero:

I have also heard horror stories about how dogs are treated with in the security industry, and I have observed it my self, living in Kennels out the back of an industrial complex and other things that just turn my stomach as a dog owner.

So I can understand when someone comes on and asks about things like the type of training I want this dog to have why someone else in the security industry might be a little curious about how I would be handling the dog.

As I said in my initial post, I am looking for someone who has a strong background in dog training who I can work with and be part of the training of this dog so that the dog and I can form a bond, when it is completed its training I will house the dog myself ensuring it has a quiet area to rest and that it gets acclimatized to a work/family environment where it knows when one leash comes out its going for a walk when the other comes out its going to work.

This may be a pipe dream but I believe it can be done in a safe manner. This is why I need a strong instructor who can not only train my dog and find me a good dog, but who can work with me and train me as a profficient handler so that my dog does not become a kennel dog like some of the other ones I have seen.

you know, I know some about dogs, I have 2 as pets, and I know situations which are healthy and which are not.. Dogs should not be crated up in a 5x8 cell with a small house for shelter, they need to have adequite space to move around and stretch, a dog just like a human should not be worked 3-4 times a day though they may seen to enjoy it, just like us they get tired and cranky and may react negatively in a less hostile situation resulting in the most unfortunate result of a bite and possibly being put down.

I remember one company I interviewed with, I went into this building that had to be 2 trailers put together with the Kennels in the back, all I could smell was Pee and Poo the stench was so overwhelming that I actually had to leave before they wanted to conclude the interview, they called me up and offered me the job still, I was professional but I ended up not taking the job cause I could not stand how the company was treating the dogs and to make it worse I would have had to pick up the dog and transport it in my personal vehicle to and from the site.

My husband just (about a week ago) handed over the Security Company to my daughter, with the License to use Canines In Ontario, The company can do Drug searches and Search and rescue,  aggression dogs. You need a special license from the Attorney General if you want to go on your own. PSIS.PrivateSecurity@ontario.ca If you are going to work for a Security Company make sure they are license and have special insurance to use Canines, otherwise you are on the hook for the liability if the dog bite someone. And belief me that happens

Hey Nero:

Yeah, I know dogs can bite at any time, I have seen police dogs in action its not pretty, but thats why I want to be involved in the training so I can read my dog and I do not accidently overwork it to the point where either I am too tired and make a mistake which happens we are after all only human, or the dog is to tired and reacts badly to a begine situation and ends up having to be put down.

I have actually researched opening up a security company, it costs a lot of money to do, so I am looking for a company that may consider hiring me and a dog as a team, not supplying one that I do not know the commands for..

Many security companies have their dogs trained in english or other languages like french or german for safety reasons as you may know, well I want to be involved in that training so when the dog does something I know what its doing not just reacting to a situation.
