EDMONTON - When an 11-year-old Edmonton boy began pulling out his own teeth at school, it was painfully obvious that something was seriously wrong.
It turns out the boy was the victim of some severe and repeated sexual abuse by a roommate of his grandfather's during weekend visits.
On Wednesday, the abuser - 35-year-old Robert Brian Neudorf - was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty in provincial court to sexual interference.
Court heard the "horrific" sex crimes occurred between Sept. 1, 2008, and Jan. 31, 2010.
"They show a prolonged and consistent pattern of severe sexual abuse against the victim, who was between 10 and 11 at the time," said Judge Shelagh Creagh, who ruled an eight-year prison term was appropriate, but knocked off two years for Neudorf's guilty plea and remorse.
Crown prosecutor Mark Huyser-Wierenga said the boy, who is now just about 12, was repeatedly sexually assaulted by Neudorf while visiting his grandfather.
As a result of the abuse, the boy began having episodes of self-mutilation, which included him pulling out four teeth, which were not loose, while at school.
The boy then revealed to his mother what was going on.
Police were contacted and Neudorf confessed, telling officers he was "ashamed of himself."
Court heard Neudorf has a criminal record including a 1998 conviction for possession of child pornography, for which he got a $2,500 fine and two year's probation.
At the time, court heard paramedics had responded to Neudorf's home because he was running around saying he was possessed and called police after finding numerous graphic pictures of young boys engaged in sex acts.
Defence lawyer Kent Teskey said Neudorf is a diagnosed schizophrenic.
Prior to sentencing, Neudorf apologized in court.
"I just feel terrible that I did this," he said. "I can't understand why I did it."
Neudorf was also ordered to submit a DNA sample for the national DNA databank in Ottawa and placed on the national sex offender registry for 20 years.
