B.C. judge orders woman accused of killing babies not to get pregnant

It was just one of several exceptional conditions announced this past week, aimed at preventing her from getting pregnant.
Earlier this month, Sarah Jee-Wah Leung, 24, was charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the slayings of her two baby sons.
The body of the first son, who was born on April 2, 2009, and is identified only as “infant child #1” in the indictment, was found wrapped in a plastic bag behind the home of Leung’s parents on in East Vancouver.
The body of the second son, identified as “infant child #2” and born on March 7, 2010, has never been located.
Leung was initially held in custody, but appeared in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver for a bail hearing that began Thursday and concluded Friday.
Submissions given, evidence heard and reasons cannot be reported, due to a publication ban imposed by B.C. Supreme Court Justice Bill Smart.
Leung, a slightly built young woman wearing a grey track suit, sat quietly in the prisoner’s dock during the hearing. Her parents were present in the public gallery.
The judge ultimately ordered that Leung be released, but imposed 17 conditions in all, including the measures designed to keep her from getting pregnant again.
The judge ordered that Leung “take all reasonable steps to ensure that you do not become pregnant.”
Leung must make an appointment with a doctor within a week of her release from prison to determine whether or not she is pregnant.
“If you are pregnant, you shall return prior to July 9 to this court to review these conditions,” said the judge’s conditions.
“If advised you are not pregnant, you shall discuss with your doctor your birth-control options and use a method of birth control recommended and prescribed by your doctor.”
Leung must provide her doctor with written consent to disclose to her bail supervisor any information concerning whether or not she is pregnant, what birth-control methods have been prescribed and whether she is using them.
“Under the direction of the bail supervisor, you shall visit your doctor at least once every four weeks to obtain a pregnancy test,” say the conditions.
“If at any time you become pregnant, you shall return to this court within seven days for a review of these conditions.”
The strictest conditions came at the end of the list.
“Unless and until this court changes this condition, you shall not have sexual intercourse with anyone,” says the 16th condition.
“Unless and until this court changes this condition, you shall not be in the presence of Anson Lee at any time unless in the presence of at least one other adult person,” says the 17th and final condition.
Leung’s parents, Derick and Maggy Leung, are to each provide a $100,000 surety, for a total surety of $200,000.
Leung is to reside in their home and has surrendered her passport. She is to remain in British Columbia and not leave the province without permission of the court.
Leung’s next court appearance is set for July 20 in provincial court.
