PostSubject: Flat Stanley   Wed 26 May 2010, 6:09 pm

I am not sure if anyone has heard of this project in the schools.. I find it pretty interesting..

My daughter came home from school one day asking for an address of a relative she can send her Flat stanley too.. I was like Okay.. no explanation.

So we sent it back home. Then we later received an email from my nephew, who was so excited that Flat stanley visited his class and he had so much fun in Manitoba. I promised my daughter I wouldn't google until Flat stanley made his way back to Alberta

She just came home from school and said her flat stanley made it home safe. And he brought postcards and he was even wearing a nice new I love Manitoba Tshirt.

So I just had to google..

What an interesting project..

Students make paper Flat Stanleys and begin a journal with him for a few days. Then Flat Stanley and the journal are sent to another school where students there treat Flat Stanley as a guest and complete the journal. Flat Stanley and the journal are then returned to the original sender. Students can plot his travels on maps and share the contents of the journal. Often, a Flat Stanley returns with a pin or postcard from his visit. Some teachers prefer to use e-mail only. Especially creative hosts send the Flat Stanleys back with pictures, souvenirs, stories and reminders of the visit.

In her class, they have a map.. and they mark where their flat stanley projects go.. Then they learn about the different places through these journals and pictures. What an interesting thing. I read the website and this little project has picked up through out the years.

All started by a Canadian. What a great little method to learn about new places and new things

Not too sure Yorkie, Heck I haven't even seen her flat stanley.. LMAO...

But she was so excited getting off the bus. I don't think I have seen her run down the drive way.. and then said I need to email Joel and say he made it safe and sound.

I was like HUH? She said Flat stanley.. LOL

I just thought it was a neat little project. I am going to write to the teacher and see if he gets sent out again....

I think it is just a great little way to keep kids from different parts of the country/world in touch

That's cool, I've never heard of that. Too bad they didn't have something like that for my kids when they were in the younger grades.

Mini, get a picture of your daughter's flat stanley and post it on here if you get a chance.

One class in our local elementary schools did the Flat Stanley.....Our big once a week newspaper had a big article about it......all the kids in that class sent their Stanley to a different school in a different state......Three months went by before the first Stanley came back.....He came back with a huge package from one of the Dakota's.....A teacher there did everything with Stanley...and took many pictures with him....from tucking him into bed to him visiting that town's hot spots to participating in the classroon.....the package was full of all the pictures, maps, info about the town and school, menus...all kinds of stuff........it was an interesting newspaper article.....the class had alot of fun going thru the package and learning about this place they have never been....I had never heard about Flat Stanley till I read that newspaper article....

I will make a flat Stanley..

So just so we are clear... flat Stanley starts here and whoever gets him next sends him to someone else, and so on.... Each of us writes in the journal.

Perhaps instead of sending the post card with Stanley, we could send a post card to the person that sent you Stanley.... saves on the cost of Stanley's trip.

Whatcha think?
