PostSubject: Assisted Suicide   Mon 10 May 2010, 3:26 pm

Since for the most part we've been able to debate the topic of abortion without major fights... I thought I would ask about your thoughts on assisted suicide.

As a PSW, I see a lot of people who appear to be suffering in pain and I hate seeing it. I also hated seeing my father in pain but I don't know if I would have respected his decision should he have decided to go that route.
When I was talking with my husband about it, I thought perhaps if they had the family sign off on it and the person was of sound mind it wouldn't be a bad thing. After all, we allow a form of assisted death with our pets why not those we love just as much if not more.

So.... what do you all think? Do you agree or disagree? What parameters would you think should be enforced to make it better regulated?

as opposed to calling it assisted suicide I prefer to call it the right to die with dignity
I believe it should be legal,no one should have to endure the pain and loss of dignity when it is known that it is something terminal

I think it's easy to sit back when we're all healthy and vibrant and make claims such as "it's wrong" or "it's an easy way out" or even "it's unfair." We are assuming someone else's life is all about us and it's actually very selfish to even think we have the right to tell another what to do with their life.

Have you ever lived with unmanageable , constant pain that won't ever get better? Have you ever lost your dignity?

If someone is terminally ill and would rather go now than have to endure excrutiating pain or other things, then they should have that right. It's their life. Their families/friends will have to deal with their death eventually anyhow. Why does it have to be when it's more convenient for THEM?

I think the most compassionate and caring thing a human being can do is to tell someone in those circumstances, that they support their decision. After all, it's about them, not anyone else.

I think it should be legal.

It is odd to me that we often allow our pets more dignity in death than our family members.

Not an easy thing to do and it weighs heavy on your mind for a very long time, even heavier on the heart, when the decision is made, always think selfishly and wonder if you could have had just one more day,

100 percent for it.

However, if it were to pass- it must have some very strict full proof guidelines. Because I can see it happening because of greed.

It would have to be done after minimum of 3 drs. agree that there is nothing left that they can do to improve the quality of life.It should never be a family member that make the final decision

I could do it in a heartbeat after the stuff I have witnessed these past 3 years.

I find it much more haunting that it wasn't done.

I thought this would have been a controversial subject... but it appears like we all agree on it.

I believe in it and feel that is the right thing to do. I've seen too many die a slow death and it just takes such a toll on the family and loved ones as well as the ill person. I remember my step Dad on his death bed and it killed him slowly to see us all suffering. He made a pact that he had watched us all suffer enough and he insisted that for his funeral he wanted one visitation followed by a celebration of his life. This was his wish and I remember at the time thinking that wasn't fair because I only knew the three days visitation followed by the eulogy and he made me realize that if people care enough about you they will make a way to be there for that one day. I miss him to no end and I wish he would have had this option as he suffered long and hard.

I 100% think it should be made legal.

Some people say that we should not play god, but when your to the point of no return, and your laying in a hospital bed, litteraly dying of pain, I think you should have a right as a human being to end your suffering.

I wish to god I never have to go through such things with my loved ones or myself, but I think that this should be a personal choice.

Yes they have the DNR in place, wow.. once your heart litterally goes out on you, then they can't revive you, why can't they just bump it up a little and allow people to choose when to go when they are terminally ill. We do it for our beloved pets when they suffer, why not us?

I do though beleive that there should be strict restrictions. I think its a matter of when they allow such things people take advantage and cross boundaries.

My husband was a strong man, physically, emotionally and mentally,it killed me to see him with pain with no realease,we have to realize at some point we are keeping them alive for selfish reasons.

To be honest, I personally haven't ever come up against much dissent regarding the topic.

It doesn't seem to be a "hot button" issue, like some others.

My Mom is 73 and told me when she's at the end of her rope and has no quality of life left, to make sure I pull the plug. My Mom trusts me so much as to know when.

And my Mom isn't even like a person to me. She's like an element. She's like the Sun or the Moon to me. But I'll smother the flame when I feel the time is right. My Mom will never suffer. I'll see to it. We made a pact! And I'll make the same pact with my little daughters about me in my elder years when the time comes. We're a really tight family! Smile
