PostSubject: It's going to suck when she's no longer here **UPDATE **   It's going to suck when she's no longer here **UPDATE ** Icon_minitimeSat 27 Feb 2016, 5:32 pm

This is really difficult for me to post as one minute I'm in tears and next a little ok.  My girl is getting old (9 years and 3 months old), had her in my life since she was 10 weeks old.  The only thing I hate about the Rottweiler breed (any dog breed) is that they never seem to live long enough.  5 years ago she was diagnosed with arthritis, hip dysplasia, and siatica.  Nothing that metacam couldn't help with when she was in pain from inflamation, and her quality of life was still good.  She was running around and acting like her silly, goofy self.

A few weeks ago we went to the vet so that he could examine her and prescribe metacam as she was limping and not putting any pressure on her hind back left leg, and crying in pain.  The metacam seemed to help for a week.  I tought maybe she had a torn ACL and wanted x-rays to confirm and confirm if it was a partial or full tear.  So back to the vet yesterday.  The vet sedated her so that x-rays could be taken.  What a long wait in his ofice for the results.  It was what I had suspected a partially torn ACL but wasn't expecting the next thing the vet found in his x-rays.  There is a large hard lump near her hip area on the left leg.  This could have only been detected with her lying down and sedated where her muscles are very relaxed.

The vet thinks from the x-rays looking at the bone area that it is either an infection or bone cancer (something that is very common in this breed).  I think the vet thinks it's bone cancer but wants to give me some hope.  My gut also tells me it's cancer.  My options were to put her on a mixture of metacam and tramadol for pain and antibiotics.  The antibiotics because if it is an infection that x-rays will show in a few weeks that it has cleared up.   My next option was that if it is bone cancer to have her leg amputated.  That one is not an option for me as I'm not going to put her through that.  I chose the option to put her on the pain meds and antibiotics just in case it is an infection and to give me a few more weeks with her.  When I bring her back to the vets in a few weeks for a second x-ray and it's determined that she does infact have bone cancer, I wont be bringing her home.  I made the decision to say my goodbyes early by spending as much time possible with my baby girl, and staying by her side as she passes over the rainbow bridge.

If or when I have to make that decision, I want to make her last days as fun for her as possible.  These last memories are more for myself than her.  Her last week I want to her meals to be a mixture of rice, chicken, and steak.  No canned or bag dog food.  Three days out of the week, I couple tablespoons of vanilla ice cream.  A few minutes before she is sedated to be put down I want her to have her first taste of chocolate - a Reeces peanut butter cup.  Take more pictures of her.

I need some more ideas and maybe listening to your ideas I can try or may trigger something else I can do with her .

My question:  If you knew that you had to make that difficult decision to have your pet pts in a few weeks, would you do anything special for the during those last few days?  If so what would you do?

***UPDATE ***
This morning I helped my old girl cross over the rainbow bridge. It became apparent to me a week after taking the antibiotics that it was osteosarcoma and not a bone infection. Her health was getting worse from 2 weeks ago. So before this extremely painful form of cancer did any more damage to her body, I made the difficult decision to help her cross over. I didn't get to do all the things I planned but thankful for the 2 weeks that I got to say my goodbyes. Last night at 1:30 am after spending 6 hours at the ER with my youngest son from a really bad asthma attack, I swung by McDonald's to pick up a happy meal for her. She had a plain cheese burger, small fries, and a vanilla sundae. Which she just loved. I took a few more picks of her this morning before the trip to the vets, gave a good breakfast, let her eat all the treats she wanted, and with the weather being so nice and mild out, we went for a last walk around the yard and a car ride.

BBE,

My head is spinning with all that I want to say to you.
I only had one dog that lived to double digits and he was my everything, My Sam.
He suffered so badly with seizures at the end-I'd never want to do that again. That last day was hard.

My cat Noah was in bad pain after a not so good spay. and we used Tramadol. (I LOVE that pain med)
Healthy 13 year old cat now.

My Hudson had a large cancer lump/mass in his neck. I did do the surgery to have the lump removed. He lived for only 6 months after the surgery.
If I know I did one thing right-it was that surgery. We tried and Hudson tried. We had 6 months of pure bliss together, I'd never change that operation desc ion for anything. We tried and Hudson was strong enough and wanted to. Those 6 months were ours together.

My question: If you knew that you had to make that difficult decision to have your pet pts in a few weeks, would you do anything special for the during those last few days? If so what would you do?

I always take pictures of my dogs but I'm never in them.
Get someone to take pics of you and her together.
I have a mason jar of Sams fur that I cut off him. Mason jars hold the scent-my stinky kid.

I'm not opposed to amputation..that word sounds horrible but dogs bounce back so good.
I had the 3 legged setter. It was an injury that caused Tristan to lose a leg not cancer.
I'm not trying to be unkind but dogs don't seem to "mind" a missing limb.

I'm sorry if I said anything wrong BBE.

My Sam was an ice cream addict from pup.
When he was seizing so bad, the recommendation was vanilla ice cream.
I had an ice cream covered kid that last night. (and in a messed up way...I am SO glad he had the ice cream)
All over his pretty fur.

I'm sorry you're going to have to face that pain. Our pets do not live long enough. I agree on taking a picture with her. I think the pet photographer in Windsor who works with the humane society is Angie Chauvin but I could be wrong.

I would give Tank the biggest steak that last night. We would visit all the family that loves him and would miss him lots. I would take him to a park where he could sniff every tree and mark them all. He currently doesn't sleep in our bed unless the hubby is on midnights but he would get the bed that last week and all the cuddles I could muster.

Hi Jersey,
You didn't say anything wrong.  I find your post very comforting. Smile I would love to have many more years with my old girl but even the vet is in agreement that with her age, arthritis and sciatica that an amputation would not be a good choice.  It was an option that he gave but advised against it.  I'm praying that it's an infection and the antibiotics will help.  I guess I'm just trying to prepare myself in the case it's not, and those last days would be more for me and easier for me saying goodbye, and have those last good memories.  Right now she looks happy, somewhat comfortable, and I think those pain meds have kicked in since yesterday because she's acting like her goofy self.

Hi Kbullet,
I know Angie.  I think I'm going to have to go the cheaper (free) route with bills and vet bills, and do the at home point and shoot and cell phone camera route.

Reading your post about the big steak part, has me changing my mind to steak and rice and vanilla ice cream for her if it comes to that decision.

If you want, I would gladly meet you at a park and take the pictures for you with my digital camera. Then at least you can focus on her. I'm no photographer but I do whatever I can to make it a nice shot for you.

Thanks but I can't move my big girl into a car unless it's to the vets and back. I was mentioning to my youngest son that I wanted to get some non-professional pics of Neyla. He beat me to it. He has been taking pics of her these past few weeks and showed me some of them. I now have pics of her when she is in her senior years. When I get a good month where my kids are using up the bandwidth with my craptastic internet, I'll post a few.

I'm so sorry Jersey. They really know how to work their way into your heart in a big way. They're like family. Neyla was a silly and gentle Rottie. She loved all animals, even the ones that didn't like her. I'm sure she is playing pain free with Chandler.
