Stop slapping your dog in the face (vent) Empty
PostSubject: Stop slapping your dog in the face (vent)   Stop slapping your dog in the face (vent) Icon_minitimeThu 04 Oct 2012, 11:59 pm

There is this one couple who signed their puppy (4 to 5 months old) up for an 8 week beginners obedience class. Out of the 8 weeks, I've only seen the wife 2 to 3 times. It's mainly her husband and daughter who come in to do the work. The husband is very patient with the puppy. Their daughter loves the puppy but it is a large breed dog and the puppy gets extremely excited and mouths a lot due to teething. For whatever reason the husband was not able to make to class, so his wife came with the puppy and their daughter. You can tell the wife has not been doing any of the homework or even socializing much with the puppy. I get that puppies mouth during teething and some like her puppy are extremely rambunctious. But that does not make it right to slap the puppy in the face, not once but a few times because the puppy isn't listening to you, and in front of the whole class. She wasn't slapping it hard in the face, but it wasn't a light tap either. Every time the puppy was slapped on the side of the muzzle, the little shark went after her harder with his teeth. She was the one who decided not to come to the classes to learn how to train and deal with certain puppy issues. She was the one who decided not to listen wen being told over and over again how to handle the puppy, the 3 times she did show up to classes. Hitting is something some humans do when we are frustrated that things are not going the way we would like them to. Had to ask her in front of everyone to stop hitting the puppy, and ended up taking the puppy from her for a while to give her a break for 10 to 15 minutes.

Wow, that is terrible!! Poor puppy is just being a puppy. I bet that she has little interaction with the pup at home and is at wits end because she has chosen not to educate herself properly.

I don't believe in hitting but I often show the slipper and somehow my two dogs equate that with I better stop now. The lab is pretty smart and stubborn and knows that it is simply a shaking slipper and as soon as he gets it on his own time its good as gone. He chews them all the time. Hubby gets a new pair of slippers on average of every 3 months cause the first time he doesn't put them away they're a goner and we ALWAYS know who the culprit is in the mysterious slipper chewing.

And a year down the road she's going to be complaining that the dog always bites at her hands.

If the lady was a prick, the dog trainer or I would have wanted to pull her off to the other room and told her off. She really was a nice lady, not very sharp when it comes to interacting with her puppy. and very frustrated with the puppy with the puppy biting. I don't think the puppy gets enough exercise for it's breed and energy level. All 8 weeks the puppy has come into class extremely excited and distracted. This isn't the first or last beginner dog handler that's come into class and has slapped their dog in the face. I've seen the dog trainer pull a couple dog owners out into the other room and tell them off. It's a good thing the husband has patience and handles the dog mostly, and the little girl tries to help. It could be one of those situations where the husband and child want a dog, but the wife doesn't care as long as she doesn't have the responsibility of training the dog.

Okay way off topic but I had to update because I mentioned the slippers and guess what Junior got while we were at work today. Yup, hubby left them out and Junior had fun with them.

I don't wear slippers and it is very rare that I ever leave any of my footwear out where he can get them. Hubby puts them in the weirdest places and wonders why Junior gets them.

I realize this is an old post but would like to address this statement.

If the lady was a prick, the dog trainer or I would have wanted to pull her off to the other room and told her off.

Why not just contact the SPCA and let them deal with the situation. Or ask the person to remove themselves from the class all together.
