Ok, I feel bad that these people had the fire and lost everything and I don't have issue with them getting some help.....BUT......why the hell is this only a story because they DIDN'T have insurance? If they did, would this have even made the paper? Does a story where people HAVE insurance EVER get in the paper? Oh wait, they don't need help, they covered their own asses.

Sorry if this offends any of you. We're not exactly rockin' the good life, but our insurance is paid every month, whether we can afford it or not. Please feel free to tear me a new one, just had to throw it out there.

http://www.lfpress.com/2013/02/18/neighbours-help-amputee-escape-fire

Neighbours carried a double amputee to safety after a fire
that tore through his Adelaide St. apartment left him and his wife
homeless.

Susan Bouillon was awakened by the screams of her husband, disabled
63-year-old Leo Bouillon, when the blaze started at about 3 p.m.
Saturday in their sixth-floor apartment at 1132 Adelaide St. N.

“The apartment was fully engulfed” in flames, said Susan, 52. “We were just lucky that we got out in time.”

For that, they can thank a pair of neighbours Susan says helped guide
Leo to safety from the apartment to the building’s main floor.

“One of them lent his jacket to Leo and then they carried him and his
wheelchair down the stairs for us,” she said. “I just think they’re
awesome. ‘Thank you’ just doesn’t say enough.”

London Fire officials peg the damage at about $100,000. No one was
hurt and the cause of the fire is still under investigation Monday.

The Bouillons lost most of their possessions in the blaze and, making
the aftermath all the more difficult, they didn’t have insurance.

The couple has been given a hotel room, paid for by the Red Cross,
but that ends on Tuesday. Family members have helped pay for two more
days, and Susan said she’ll ask Ontario Works about emergency shelter
options beyond that.

Her main concern is that, wherever they land, they be allowed to keep
with them her two dogs, Belle and Beau: “They’re not just dogs to me.
They’re part of our family.”

Family friends have donated bags of clothing, she says, adding she’s beyond grateful for the help.

“I’m totally blown away that there are that many people out there who
really care. I didn’t know that we knew that many people or that that
many people would offer to help.”

While safe and sound, and clearly overwhelmed by the help they’ve
received, Susan and her husband remain uneasy about their medium- and
long-term future.

“It’s good that we are all safe, but I have no idea what we’re going
to do,” she said. “I don’t know where we’ll end up. I just don’t know
right now.”

I agree with you Fleas, they should have had property insurance. But there are some people out there that will cheap out to cut costs on important things.

In part I agree with you on principle but I was also poor enough at one time to not be able to afford house insurance so I can see both sides of the coin and I don't necessarily think that it makes these people irresponsible when its a few days worth on food on their table or the security of what if. jmpo

Can't afford insurance, but can afford to feed a dog? I'm no dog fan, but I do love cats. We don't have one...because insurance is more important than another mouth to feed.

I'm not trying to pick on this couple themselves, I'm just getting tired of all the "donations" to irresponsible people. I doubt if I burned down my "home" today, all these people would come running, because we're insured.

Bring it! LOL!

LOL...we fed a dog when at times we could barely feed ourselves. Sorry I get your point but I just don't agree. People help people not because they have to but because they want to and I don't think anyone has a right to judge what others deem worthy.

I choose to support different causes and sometimes it is individuals who need help but I rarely ever give change to people who ask for it because I choose not to support their habits. This is not to say that I will not give a few bucks to a stranger but I base my choice to support them on different reasons.

EG. A young well dressed guy outside of Giant Tiger asking for change who was well kept, respectful in is approach and sober vs double amputee outside of walmart who was scruffy, half drunk and puffing on a cigg. The first guy got my few extra dollars because although he was out of his luck he had a genuine way about him and nothing in his mannerism made me feel like I was being taken for a fool in deciding to make his day a little brighter. As for the amputee I felt bad for not giving him money as clearly he has had shit luck somewhere but in my personal opinion I refuse to give money to someone who is simply going to piss it away.

I'm not against helping people out. I'd hope the same help would come to me and my family if we ever got in the situation. I give to charity, I help those who need it when I can....I just don't like that these stories become front page news because of a lack of responsibility.

Like I said earlier, I don't have it all and just about lost all we did have not that long ago, but that was on us. We screwed up and nobody came to save the day. Maybe I'm just getting old and bitter.

I didn't mean to pick on the dog either. I just know having a pet can cost way more than insurance in any given month. When I have a cat, that's my baby....I just wouldn't put a pet over the potential safety and well being of my family.

I wonder just how many people who "can't afford" insurance (or can't afford to feed their kids), CAN afford to buy smokes and booze.

Just thinking out loud.

I am also sure that they don't let this information into those newspaper articles, and they sure won't show the 3 or 4 cases of empties in the background of the photo.

Let's do a little math exercise ... a couple each smokes a pack a day and drinks a case of beer a week (a conservative estimate for sure) ... how much do they spend on smokes and beer each month?

Well here I get two packs for $16 and I think it is near $40 for a case of Coors. So my estimate is at minimum $150 per week so $600 per month. They must sell themselves to be able to maintain this...

My home insurance (including contents and liability) is just over $250 for six months, so about a half a month worth of smokes.

Now; let's talk about cable television, Internet access, text messaging, cell phone plans. There are always ways to cut back.

Ten years ago my leg broke and I was off work. Three months in a cast, couple weeks wait for surgery for tendon transplant and foot rebuild, three months in a wheelchair then on to a cast again. Eleven months out of work.......and I was the sole bread winner.

We had been in our new home less than four years, still had one teenager at home and had all the usual bills. Well medical EI is only good for 14 weeks. When I asked them what do I do now they said "there's always welfare". Contacted social services to be told I had to apply for short term disability first. If I could prove to SA that I was not approved for disability then they would consider opening a file for us. Disability felt I should be able to look for other work.........even though confined to a wheelchair and not allowed to touch the foot to the floor. Finally got the 'official' word that they would not consider a claim and was able to get assistance through SA.

If it had not been for the generosity of the local church and food bank, wonderful caring co workers and customers and a lot of good drugs I don't know how we would have survived that period. But there were two things that always got paid.......the mortgage and the insurance on the roof over our heads. It was stressful enough having to rely on others to supplement our day to day needs, there's no way in hell we were going to put the extra burden on ourselves or be forced to ask others to shelter us as well.

It was a long road and took years to recover from the loss......but we took great comfort in knowing our home was secure.

Chances are what a normal person spends on Timmies coffee in a month would more than cover any insurance needs..........the cigs and suds package is closer to rent/mortgage.
