Should the schools be supplying condoms in all of their schools or the school
nurses be able to hand out birth control pills?

How about the morning after pill?

Would you or have you put your girls on any kind of birth control or offered to buy your boys condoms?

I think that schools should be providing condoms to ALL students of both sexes. As for the birth control I'm not so sure because some kids have serious side effects so while i think that should be up to the parents I am well aware that some parents are not proactive and deny that their kids are "doing it".

When I was young we used to go to the birth control clinic and get birth control which was confidential but also prescribed by a MD which I think is semi okay. There are a lot of birth control pills nowadays that create serious problems in young girls and I think that parents need to be in on the discussion. Remember me telling you about my niece and her migraines well that was a side effect of her BC pills so I now firmly believe that parents need to be consulted.

I think handing out condoms is ok. In Windsor we have a Teen Health Center where you can get condoms, pills, pregnancy tests and your parents don't have to provide consent. They also provide other teen services and will do your physicals and I did go there after my father died for some therapy.

I think hiding under a rock and pretending your kid isn't sexually active is about the dumbest thing you can do. You were a teen once... did you have sex or fool around? If you didn't at least fool around, you were the exception.

I hope when I have a child I can foster an open relationship where they can come to me when the time comes to ask for birth control. I was pretty young when I first had sex and even younger when I was engaging in other sexual activities... I'm not stupid, I know my kid will probably be the same.

I say give it out.
I would prefer that parents take control of this issue with their kids of course but that isn't always going to happen.
I don't see many parents "taking control" of much at all.

My mom never talked to me about anything in the sex department... except nice girls don't do that.
Umm ma, yeah they do.
Hand out condoms.
BC pills have changed so much from when I was young.
We have injections and patches.
How could that not confuse a 14 year old. I'm old as dirt and I'm confused.

I get that there are side effects with the pill and the other things and parents should be consulted before meds are dished out but don't hide your head in the sand and neglect talking to your own children. I say a big THANK YOU to the person that actually provided my kid with the information that I did not.

I put my girls on birth control some time back,I also took the time to explain that this did not give them free reign to have sex,but that if it happened they would at least be protected from being a young mom

I also took time to talk about condoms and the need to protect themselves from STD'S,from there they took it to masturbation which we discussed at the breakfast table
I am pretty open with my kids and the sex talk.

I can tell you my mom told me "if a boy wants to don't" whatever the hell that was supposed to mean when I was 13,but then she also spelled SEX

No one has mentioned the morning after pill that some schools are now starting to dispense without parental permission

Any thoughts?

I never commented because I don't know much about it and what the implications are for use. I know girls who have used it and seemed to have no issues or side effects but that is about the extent of my knowledge as it was not really heard of in my teenage years.

To be honest, I don't know. In way yes, it would be nice if schools supplied condoms. But then who is going to pay for these condoms to be provided to schools? The tax payers. I'm not sure if I want to fork out any more of my hard earned money on taxes when I'm already taxed to death.

I don't think schools should be providing birth control pills. There are different stengths and some girls may have a medical history that the school is not fully aware of. Anything like that for liability reasons should be left to the child's family doctor.

I don't know much about the morning after pill and if there are any side effects. I don't think schools should be handing out the morning after pill. Giving this pill could create a huge liability on the school. What if a child was given this pill, parents find out and and sue the school board because it violates their religious beliefs. When government institutions are sued, it doesn't come out of their personal pay cheques, it comes out of our tax money.

You can buy the morning after pill without a presciption now.
The condom companies are probably providing the free condoms.
Yes, the pill should be given by a doctor.
