| If the lancets were changed everytime, the concern for me would be minimal to say the least
Is it the ideal situation? Probably not,but the pen itself would pose little risk.

| They often use the same pen in retirement and nursing home situations. The only thing to change is the lancet. As long as that is changed and the person didn't bleed all over the pen there is no risk of infection. | |

| I understand that part but what pisses me off is the simple fact that from a university perspective there is research ethics that needs to be completed well in advance to be granted clearance to conduct research and most schools also have such a policy.
And as these children were minors, and being there was no parental consent why the hell was the prof just being a douche on all counts?
This article is a great example of why I advocate for First Nations researchers to be doing our own research with our own people and if we are gonna bring in some rednecks they need to be mentored into how to conduct respectful research. On any grounds this prof was not conducting himself in a respectful manner.

| I understand the part about NO parental consent that was wrong in a lot of ways
I don't see it as any kind of research going on,but the article was making a big production of the HIV risk, which is minimal
I would have preferred the article was more atuned to the fact that this diabetes test WAS in fact done without showing due respect to the childrens parents.

Yorkie I also wish the article was more in line with facts and not fear mongering but I also work for a university and I am well aware of how profs like to sometimes sneak their research under the radar. I can almost guarantee that this was in fact research. Diabetes in the Aboriginal populations especially in the remote northern locations is out of control and I can almost guarantee he/she would get a few publications from his unethical approach to research. I'm not sure if you are aware but anything Aboriginal with a research focus these days is very sexy and there are enormous amounts of grants that pay big money for profs to conduct Aboriginal research. Here is a link to the Aboriginal grants offered by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). Look at the amounts under the funding opportunities. This prof prob thought they would get their foot in the door with some preliminary findings. http://www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/funding-financement/programs-programmes/priority_areas-domaines_prioritaires/aboriginal_research-recherche_autochtone-eng.aspx

| Then they are assholes Kewl,I don't give a damn what race it is,do it once,do it right
I will look at the links you posted, but I have a feeling it is going to make the general population ugly.
I do know that aboriginal people are at higher risk of diabetes than other races. It would raise the same outcry here if it had happened to the black race testing for sickle cell anemia

| LMAO, I am surrounded by assholes at my work. And sadly, even our one Aboriginal prof may as well be white for there is no cultural sensitivity. | |

| I can believe that kewl, working with them when I was in Alberta I found sometimes the aboriginal people were more prejudice against their own race than the white people were | |
