Diamond Dog Food Recall Expands Again
by MIKE SAGMAN

May 4, 2012 – Diamond Pet Foods has today announced that it is expanding its voluntary recall to include batches of nine brands of dry pet food formulations due to potential contamination with Salmonella bacteria.

The affected products were manufactured between December 9, 2011 and April 7, 2012.
This current event is in addition to three other recalls announced by Diamond last month.
According to the company, none of the additional products being recalled today have tested positive for Salmonella. However, the manufacturer claims it is pulling these products from store shelves “as a precaution”.

Brands named in this recall now include:
Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul

Important Batch Information
Due to the ever-changing nature of this unusually widespread recall event, we recommend visiting the special Diamond Pet Foods Recall website for the most up-to-date information.
You may also wish to check out the Diamond news release on which this report was actually based.
The recall site provides specific batch information and diagrams that show how to read package

Diamond Pet Foods apologizes for any issues this may cause consumers and their pets. Pet owners who are unsure if the product they purchased is included in the recall, or who would like replacement product or a refund, may contact Diamond Pet Foods via a toll free call at 1-866-918-8756, Monday through Sunday, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. EST. Consumers may also go to a special website, www.diamondpetrecall.com, for more information. The company is working with distributors and retailers to ensure all affected product is removed from shelves.

Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Individuals handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product. People who believe they may have been exposed to Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. According to the Centers for Disease Control, people who are more likely to be affected by Salmonella include infants, children younger than 5 years old, organ transplant patients, people with HIV/AIDS and people receiving treatment for cancer. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have received a limited number of reports of salmonellosis, the illness caused by Salmonella. We are working with the CDC, but due to patient confidentiality, we cannot comment further.

I just saw this on FB and was going to post it here. I agree with Jersey, raw is looking better every minute. Will have to toss out the Kirklands.

O.k. I'm interested but I can't seem to find any recipes on line? Where does everyone find their recipes? Poor Panzer had diarrhea so bad I had to put him on boiled rice and cottage cheese for a while and wean him back on to his kibble....I'm not even sure what caused it.

My vet gave me the name of a good book with recipes.
I can't find where I wrote it down but I'll get it for you tomorrow.

Mine aren't showing any symptoms at all I throw the bag out and put the food in a large container. My daughter said hers didn't have those numbers on the bag she bought. I'm hoping this recall will make them super quality conscious in the future but I'm going to look in to raw in the mean time.

When I got up to feed the dog this morning, I didn't throw out the Kirklands dog food I bought her last month. She's been eating it since early March with no problems. When I think about it, people who feed their dog's on the raw diet, feed them raw chicken which could also have salmonella in it. Dogs digestive systems handle bacteria a lot better and different than humans. I think the recall was for those who don't wash their hands after feeding their dog. Which is something I always do, I'm pretty OCD about that and touching stuff. Though it would be nice to feed raw, I honestly just don't have the time in the morning to prepare it in the morning. The dog doesn't like raw, the outside cat doesn't like raw, and the three indoor cats are extremely food aggressive with each other when it's feeding time and it a raw meal.

ETA: On another forum a few years ago a Raw Food Diet book was recommended by one of the dog owners who have fed raw food for years.
The book " RAW DOG FOOD - MAKE IT EASY FOR YOU AND YOUR DOG by Carina Beth MacDonald" can be ordered on Dogwise for $12.95 for the book or if you have an e-reader can be downloaded for $8.95.

Tank has been eating this bag of food since probably March as well with no issues. They are pulling these brands as a precautionary measure. They stated they have not tested positive at all but the chicken soup brand has. I will not throw out the food he has left because I don't have the bag to get a refund and since he has had no issues, it would be a waste of time. In the future, I will be keeping the proof of purchase in case I need to.

Recalls on pet food will continue to happen just like people food. The more processed something is, the more likely it is that something can happen.

I think maybe I will just add some veggies and rice and boiled chicken and stuff to his kibble once in a while instead of going raw.
