| We've had a new employee start this week. She's had three 3 hr training shifts, a full shift last night, then another this morning with me. She's just finished her second year of university, very bright, friendly girl. She picked right up on the cash register (computerized), new lotto machine (computerized) and our video rental system (computerized). This morning I explained to her about our bakery ....... anything with today's date was to be marked 1/2 price.
She picked up a pack of cookies, looked at the label, lifted her pen then put it back in her pocket. She then headed for the counter and returned with a calculator and proceeded to calculate the 'new' price of the cookies and mark it on the label.
What part of 1/2 of $2.50 is so complicated that a soon to be 3rd yr university student would need a calculator to figure out??? | |

| Unfortunately, it's sad. My son was diagnosed with dyslexia, a friend of his has a learning disability. One day he came over after school with his homework and was using a calculator for his math homework. The only time I allow my kids to use the calculator is to confirm that they are on the right path, that's after they have figured out the math problem for themselves. I asked him why he was using the calculator. His response was his parents let him use it and they are allowed to in school. Scary thing is, his step mother is a school teacher. She has been trying to help him with his learning disability but is making things worse. His grades are so horrible, I just don't get how a parent and a teacher at that could let things get so bad. ETA: My son's new school that he will be transferring over to in September will not have any text books. I'm not thrilled about this idea. There is another new school that was built a couple years ago and the parents are complaining how their kids are struggling with how to write (with a pencil and paper) because they are being basically forced to type their work out (a computer at each desk). | |
