This is the birthday cake and wedding cake I made today... Pretty proud of them both I must say. The wedding cake was the order I told you all about a few weeks ago. And the birthday cake was for my nieces birthday...

Quick question... please be honest and tell me what you'd be willing to pay for the wedding cake because I want to make sure I didn't under/over charge.

Birthday Cake

Birthday Cake again.

The wedding cake should feed approx 60-70 people depending on how it gets cut.

Everyone just take a stab at it... I won't be offended if your "guess" is lower than what I charged.

What would you pay for a cake like that?

It would be no less than 150.00 in my area and that would be on the cheap side here

Bullet those are awesome....REALLY!!!

I'd have to say in my area the birthday cake would likely run $60 - 75 and the wedding cake $90 to 110. Now there a likely high end shops in downtown that would definitely charge more....considering the amount of work and time involved they'd be well worth it.

I just can't get over those lilies!! They and irises are my favorite so I am biased, but OMG!! Incredible job !

I think for the wedding cake $50-$75 would be good seeing them flowers cant be easy to make.

You should add up the cost of supplies to make each cake, then add in bout 5 bucks or whatever for each hour you spent making the cake maybe add a couple bucks for the hydro used for baking then you'll be able to better judge how to price them.

Best to keep prices lower for the people will recommend you to their friends ect ect that way you'll end up making more money in the long run.

Wow are you opening your own business???

I own my own business too its so much fun....

For the wedding cake I wold pay 80 to 120 (depending on the ingredients, if it was an organic cake I would pay more).

I think organic/natural/gluten and allergy free is the way to go with businesses like this, you can charge way more for the cakes and you can really focus on quality not quantity. I have always thought it was a good idea to offer this type of baked goods because its very hard to find....... you could even have a diabetic cake (sugar free) and you could charge double for it just because of the ingredients.

Just my two cents, pretty cakes.

ETA don't be the cheapest guy on the block, its one of the big mistakes new businesses make. Low prices does not equal a good business in most cases, high quality service usually does though. Especially when you are dealing with "luxury items" which a cake for a couple hundred is a luxury item.

Beautiful Cakes Bullet too bad you weren't closer to Toronto I'd get you to do a baby shower one for us next month. In particular I liked the birthday one best how pretty is that! As for the Wedding one I'd also advise you to check into competitive prices but like Pug mentioned don't go cheaper just competitive if that makes any sense because honestly I think companies are charging a lot more than any of our guesses for special occasion cakes like a Wedding one. Regardless you're doing amazing at this and you do seem to have the talent for it, way to go!

Very good work as usual...I love Mcpugs idea of perfecting your recipes to provide alternative/specialised product that would appeal to special public needs and set yourself apart from the ordinary. As far as pricing I have no idea but I know I would fully include all the costs and add 20% and then give myself a set rate of so much per hour ( I charge $20.00) for really creative time consuming fiddly bits. I wish you the best in this endeavor and don't undersell yourself. Smile

To add onto Mcpug's suggestion, what about a vegan version? I know there are none available in Windsor at this time.

Those are some things I can look into.. but I am not very well educated in the matter. You've given me somethings to think about.

good idea.

A friend of mine is a very strict vegan and has been talking about opening business for years, about a year ago someone beat her to it and they are doing VERY well. There is a market for specialty foods and its sometimes a way to stand out from the crowd.

You could do a lot with this type of business. Preparing cupcakes for parents for their children's school functions (ie. Halloween parties), birthday parties, for weddings, wedding anniversaries and other special occasions. Some people don't bake or just don't like to and would rather pay to have someone do it for them. Once you have a business plan set out, you could start designing your business cards and flyers. I don't mind helping to pass some out posting bulletin boards, handing out to family and friends, and people that I don't know but run into and are interested. Then a portfolio of pictures of your cakes onto a website. Your business sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun.

I'll 'third' that specialty suggestion. Not just vegan but offering to cater to special needs....particularly allergy problems like eggs/wheat/dyes. Likely a bit of a pain, especially the wheat one, but do-able and sought after.

Pssst Bullet maybe we can talk a Wedding cake for my Mom for next July. Mom is extremely lactose intolerant so that would have to be a big factor but my number one question would be for the right price would you be willing to make the cake, bring it and yourselves (hubby too of course) to London for my Mom's backyard nuptials next July?

If it's a possibility I figure I can pay you at least half in April when I talk you into coming to visit me at the Euchre Tournament in Windsor. 8)

Pleassssssssseeeeeeeeeeee

Just wanted to add this

www.weebly.com

This is the BEST site online to make a website and its 100% free, its fabulous.
If you ever want your own domain name just buy it form go daddy for like 8 bucks a year.

Get listed on google local business listing (that's free as well) but it puts your website high on the search list because you are listed with google directly, I think my company is like the 2nd one that comes up when you google my business it gets me loads of business.

Don't do the yellowpages...... I made that mistake once and I will never do it again, I put an add in 2 years go and it cost me 800 bucks....... and I got 1 call LMAO.

Also if you are going to go the organic route we should network because I have hundreds of clients who only eat organic food ... Maybe we can do some kind of christmas thing where you make cupcakes for me at a discount, I will hand them out to my clients along with your business card.......
